When is the best time to apply?

There is one major Application Call in spring every year when all students willing to travel in the next academic year should submit their application.

There is often one more, additional Call in autumn, but this is something you should not rely on. There might be financial limitations or the universities already unavailable.  Furthermore, due to administrative reasons, the only option left would be to go on the summer semester. No sooner.

How many universities I should look at and search for?

Definitely search for more than one, your the most favourite one. It is always good to have a backup plan in case your dreamy university is unavailable due to a high number of applicants.

!When applying, you can upload up to 3 Learning Agreements Before Mobility - which means, you can be prepared for 3 different options when on selection interview!

It either shows that you are really willing to go abroad and that you are capable of responsible and solid planning. On the other hand, we are aware, that sometimes it is truly difficult to find at least one good match to your study plan.  All of this is taken into consideration when accessing your application.

What if I struggle with finding the right match for my study plan?

Before making the final decision, you will ask the vice-dean coordinator for confirming your application (Learning Agreement Before Mobilities). Do not hesitate to contact them earlier in case you are not sure about your study plan.

In case you still prefer to go even when your stay does not match well with your study plan, consider prolonging your studies and discuss such an option with the dean's office. But never forget - to study 25 ECTS with at least one eligible subject is a must.

How much ECTS am I obliged to achieve in my study abroad?

When planning your study, you have chosen a subject in the summary of 25 ECTS from which you are obliged to bring min. 15 ECTS and one subject of recognition (eligible).

Magister student on traineeship and ECTS?

Magister (Bachelor) students are obliged to fulfil their student duties during their stay abroad.

Only if you go for a traineeship into an institution, that is NOT our partner university (see the list here), you will apply for Traineeship (Learning Agreement for Traineeship - LA) and find yourself a subject, that will be fulfilled as a part of your study duties. Filled in part B2 in the LA.

If you plan to go to our partner university, you will be applying for Study abroad, and the subject to study will be either "International Traineeship" for 2 - 3 ECTS or Project A for 30 ECTS, Project B for 15 ECTS or Project C for10ECTS. If the traineeship is meant to be as work on your diploma thesis, then you will fulfil the "diploma thesis" which corresponds to Project A for 30 ECTS.

Traineeship and  "Monitoring plan" in the Learning Agreement Before Mobility?

Please fill in the planned communication with the hosting supervisor, how and with whom you plan to consult your work during your traineeship abroad, how often, etc...

Traineeship and "Evaluation plan" in the Learning Agreement Before Mobility?

Please fill in who is going to assess and evaluate your work and how the result of your work is to be used. Could be the publishing of an article, part of an ongoing project and cooperation with colleagues abroad, the start of a new project etc...

Petra Svobodová, Vienna, Austria, BOKU + Summer school in Izrael 2022/2023

Courage! And having a little ability to get things done was enough to get me to spend six months abroad. If I had known how great this period would be, I probably would have left for Erasmus after my first year and no one would have stopped me from going abroad. Choosing Vienna was strategic because I didn't want to be far from the Czech Republic and I wanted to practice my German. But what I was incredibly lucky for was a university that is way ahead in teaching. Such an equal and discussive approach of the teachers was incomparable, a completely different form of teaching than I was used to. Maybe that's why I actually went to school and didn't party the whole semester, as they say about Erasmus. Eventually, my study enthusiasm also led me to a 2-week summer school in Israel about the food of the future. And admittedly, Israel was a much stronger experience as it has a completely different culture that cannot be described in a few lines. But the mixture of different religions, historic Jerusalem or progressive Tel Aviv along with the desert and the Dead Sea (see photo) left strong memories in me. Who would have thought that the week starts on Sunday!? And to confirm my words that foreign trips are perfect, I decided to continue at BOKU and work on my thesis here, so cheers to (your and my) Erasmus!

Karel Pecha, Lisabon, Portugalsko, Nova - Faculty of Technology 2022/2023

Sun, coffee, adventure
That's how I would describe my stay in the capital of Portugal. Going somewhere for a holiday and living there are two different things, but you won't find out until you decide to do it. Portugal is specific to its southern culture, which is adorned with cheap delicious coffee, the ocean, ball games, surf and nightlife. Erasmus gives you the chance to know this and experience it all. Wherever you go, it's an adventure that can't be replaced by anything else. It has pushed me incredibly humanly. I've had time to stop and think about where I want to go in life. When else but now, when you have relatively zero commitments ? You will never find 4-5 months of free time in the future that someone will contribute to. You'll catch up with your career/study, you'll make money, but time, well, that's hard to find and there will always be something that gets in the way. Pick up and go - it's worth it!

Vojtěch Bílek, Oulu, Finland, University of Oulu 2022/2023

Erasmus is a unique opportunity and experience that will push you further and broaden your horizons, I am sure. Lots of red tape at the beginning, but it's worth it. Whatever your expectation is you will definitely meet a lot of new people, get to know a new culture, and make tremendous friendships.
I must recommend Oulu and Finland. Even before you arrive, they will help you with the necessary documents, and during your stay, everything works perfectly and there is always someone to turn to. Also, the standard of the school is very high, and international students are welcome in Oulu and the school is ready for them.
I could go on and on about the school, my friends, the sauna, nature, the reindeer around the roads, the husky safari, the black market with bikes and there is so much more. But it's much better to experience it all for yourself. Don't keep looking for excuses and go!!!

Jan Kunc, Germany, Jena, Friedrich Schiller University Jena 2022/2023

Erasmus in Jena (Germany, the federal state of Thuringia) was a great experience for me. Of course, it involved a lot of preparation, but it was worth it. I got to experience studying at a prestigious German university and, most importantly, I met a lot of new friends. Jena is a small, pleasant university town that is only a 5-hour Flixbus ride away from Prague. It's a very multicultural city, so even though I was "only" in Germany, I made friends from all over the world.

Magdalena Škrlová, Norway, Tromsø, The Arctic University of Norway  2021/2022

I spent one unforgettable semester beyond the Arctic Circle in Tromsø, Norway. A great school was not only studying at a foreign university but also learning about life there. What is it like to live in the dark during the polar night and watch the aurora borealis overhead? How does it feel to cross-country ski all the way to school? Put on snowshoes, go to the mountains and sleep in a mountain hut? And what if the polar day comes and the sun never goes to sleep? And many other questions that I wouldn't know the answer to without Erasmus. The best part is that I was able to experience everything with friends from all over the world, and I dare to say that not only the experiences but also these people, I will carry on in my life.

Kateřina Klausová, Sweden, Stocholm, KTH Royal Institute of Technology  2021/2022

My stay abroad was definitely worth all of the arrangements and stress that preceded my departure. I still benefit from the knowledge and the skills that I gained during my Erasmus. Not to mention the unforgettable experiences and friendships I made. At the Royal Institute of Technology, courses were conducted in an interactive format, with an emphasis on individual and practical work. In addition to the education, the school organized a lot of activities where it was possible to learn about Sweden culture and establish connections with other international students. Sweden is a beautiful country with a specific weather and human mentality, I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Václav Picka, Sweden, Stockholm, KTH Royal Institute of Technology 2021-2022

It is probably impossible to describe such an intense experience in a few lines. It's been the best six months of my life. It was so different from my life back home in Prague, and it made everything here a much better experience - finding my way around the city, finding a classroom at school, enrolling in classes, meeting new people, travelling, learning languages, and so much more. Stockholm, and Sweden in general, has shattered all my stereotypes. The people are not closed and cold. Everyone was helpful, and the THS (Student Club) was constantly coming up with new activities for us...
I wouldn't change it. And for you who are hesitating -
Go, go anywhere, you'll be thrilled!

Ema Mezihoráková, Francie, Compiègne, Escom - School of Organic and Mineral Chemistry 2021/2022

ESCOM is a French university specialising in chemistry. You can find it in a cosy town, Compiègne, about 45 minutes by train from Paris. What I liked a lot about Compiègne was the perfect balance between the quiet and lazy atmosphere of a little town and the youthful joy typical for places with a big number of students. Visits to beautiful castles in the vicinity, multiple trips to Paris, cycling in beautiful nature, delicious food and much more were the things I enjoyed during my Erasmus program. I am also very grateful for the opportunity to see another approach to education, which was more practical and teamwork-oriented than what I am used to in Czechia. For example, I participated in a project popularizing environmental protection.

Adéla Janků, Spain, Valencia, Universitat Politécnica de Valéncia 2021-2022

„As you do it for yourself, so you have it“ and this works twice regarding Erasmus. For everyone, Erasmus is a bit different, but it always results in new friends and experiences for a lifetime. For example, during my 10 months in Valencia, I managed to learn how to cook a Valencian paella (the only real one), walked through the city in traditional costume during las fallas, learnt to dance salsa and bachata, walked under palm trees in January wearing only a t-shirt, spoke about Czechia in primary school, and presented our team's project in Spanish to a whole class of native Spanish speakers better than some of them (their words, not mine). Erasmus just pulls you out of your everyday life and drops you in a completely unknown place where you can be anyone and do anything. And even though now I must extend my studies for a year, I don't regret that year in the slightest. I've enjoyed every day to the fullest, I've experienced and seen things I’ve never dreamed of, and I've come back a different person. And I know that from now on, Valencia will always be my second home.

Linda Stejskalová, Wien, Austria, BOKU Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2021-2022

Vienna is a very international and vibrant city. It was named the best city to live in this year and I can confirm that. The beginning of Erasmus was full of paperwork, but the foreign department of BOKU (Universität für Bodenkultur Wien) and other Erasmus students are willing to help with everything. In addition to many English and German courses, the university also offers many language courses, tandem learning, excursions, movie evenings with discussions, bonding activities for students, demonstrations, or, for example, its own Pride Parade group. Overall, BOKU is very open-minded and focused on sustainability and ecology. So, if someone is interested in such topics, they will feel great at BOKU and Vienna.

Romana Kopecká, Tallinn, Estonia, Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) 2021-2022

Do you want to know how time flies? Go on Erasmus! Half a year or maybe even a year in a foreign country sounds like a great amount of time one cannot survive. I can guarantee that not only it is survivable, but time will pass so fast that one day, you are slipping on ice in the streets of Tallinn and suddenly, it is June, and you find yourself lying on the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. This is basically how I look at my Erasmus experience a few months after my return. It was five months of incredible fun, experiences, and meeting friends from all around the world. The “Should I go on Erasmus?” part was exhausting but I finally also know the “I went on Erasmus, and it was amazing” one and I could not be more grateful.

Miroslava Mecová, Norway, Tromsø, The Arctic University of Norway  2021/2022

Erasmus in Tromsø is a lifelong love, it was a huge personal benefit for me. Thanks to living with my partner and UiT Norwegian students, with whom I felt like family after one week, I felt as if I had lived in Norway normally for a long time, I didn't even feel like a foreigner. Studying at UiT is perfect. Norway is widely known to have quality education, but the attitude of professors and people, in general, is much more important. Norwegians are kind people who always talk to you personally, I haven't met anyone who didn't smile at me. I chose Tromso because of its location in the polar region. Steep mountains rising straight from the fjords, where you can go skiing after school, omnipresent reindeer, a reserve full of special birds that you can meet even on the mountain tops, whales, the aurora borealis, the polar day... Winter and summer in Tromsø are unforgettable experiences. People live there with love and in harmony with nature. I don't know what more to wish for.

Helena Hradiská, Norway, Tromsø, The Arctic University of Norway  2021/2022

Tromsø isn't only about school and improving your English. Norwegians value the balance between work and leisure, so there is always plenty of room for adventure. And there is truly a lot to do around there. Skiing, breaking through the snow and watching the Northern Lights in winter, and on the other hand, hiking to see amazing views under the midnight sun in summer. You just have to deal with the reindeer on the roads and pack some vitamin D. God tur!

Natali Risteska, Thailand, Kasetsart University - traineeship 2021-2022

Be adventurous, open-minded, enthusiastic and curious. Ask a lot of questions and don’t be afraid to jump into the unknown. That’s how you learn more about yourself, the qualities and skills you possess and others. The subject of my traineeship was Gemstones Identification. I was working in a Gemology lab identifying coloured gemstones, by using gemological instruments and measuring the optical properties, refractive index, shape, colour, inclusions, specific gravity, and transparency of the gemstones I was given. My work was independent after my supervisor introduced me and showed me what I was supposed to do during my training. Also, when I needed help, there was a gemology master’s student in the lab and she was helping me whenever I needed some assistance. KU International Office organizes a lot of activities for international exchange students mostly. The accommodation was provided by the international student’s accommodation office at Kasetsart University. On the campus, there is a swimming pool, tennis courts, volleyball fields, a gym and two football stadiums. Also, a lot of student bars restaurants, and coffee shops. Or you can always get outside the campus and use the fast sky train called BTS to get to the centre of Bangkok or anywhere you want to go in the city. Would I like to go to another stay abroad? Yes, definitely!
